On Friday, Reuters gathered customers and partners to mark 150 years of Reuters operating in Japan and celebrate Reuters history as the longest-standing international news brand in the country.
Reuters opened its first office in Yokohama, Japan, in 1872, once the telegraph lines reached the country, making the delivery of news to and from London exponentially faster via telegram instead of mail steamers. Today, Reuters journalists in Japan continue to play a unique role in global journalism by delivering reliable information that promotes understanding between Japan and the rest of the world and empowers smart decision-making.
More than 150 Reuters and Thomson Reuters customers and partners joined the anniversary celebration. Guests heard from distinguished speakers, including Japanese politicians Kenji Wakamiya and Akira Nagatsuma and Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Japan Julia Longbottom, Kyodo News President Toru Mizutani and Jiji Press President Katsuhiko Sakai.
The event speakers joined Reuters leaders in a traditional sake barrel-breaking ceremony.
Speaking at the anniversary celebration, Reuters Paul Bascobert said, “I am proud to stand here on behalf of all our staff in Japan who have spent years in the pursuit of truth, for our deep expertise in financial coverage and our unwavering focus on delivering independent and impartial news from such a globally important country. I am honored and humbled by the trust our partners and consumers have placed in Reuters over the years.”
Reuters is celebrating the 150th anniversary of its presence in Japan through a social campaign throughout November, featuring Reuters pictures from Reuters 150th year in Japan, content from the Reuters archive and milestones. Visit @ReuterPR on Twitter to learn more.
