Reuters announced today the launch of the Issam Abdallah Visual Journalist Fellowship, named in honor of the late Reuters visual journalist Issam Abdallah.
Issam, who was killed by an Israeli tank shell on October 13, 2023 while filming cross-border fire between Israel and Lebanon, dedicated his life to visual storytelling, capturing the human impact of conflict, injustice and hope. He believed in the power of images to connect people, inspire empathy and ignite change.
Reuters is launching the Issam Abdallah Visual Journalist Fellowship to empower the next generation of visual storytellers. The fellowship will offer a year-long assignment for a visual journalist with up to five years of experience, based in Dubai, Reuters largest bureau in the Middle East.
The fellowship opportunity will allow a talented visual journalist to immerse themselves in reporting on news stories across the region. The fellow will focus on human-centred reporting, embracing Issam’s commitment to empathy and visual storytelling. They will benefit from hands-on training, an intensive learning package and mentoring from senior leaders, working across photos and video.
Applications for the Issam Abdallah Visual Journalist Fellowship open in January 2025.
