Biden urges US Congress to approve F-16 sale to Turkey ‘without delay’

Reuters was first to report that Turkey’s parliament would debate Sweden’s NATO bid on Jan. 23, and then followed that up with a series of exclusive news driving the rapid steps toward completion: U.S. President Joe Biden’s letter informing Congress that he intended to send members Turkey’s request to purchase F-16 fighter jets; an interview with the U.S. ambassador correcting predicting that President Erdogan would sign off on the legislation right away; and another scoop saying that the ratification would re-start Canada’s arms exports to Turkey after a bilateral deal was quietly reached between the sides.

Market Impact

Turkey’s delay in approving the ratification had been a major obstacle to winning congressional approval for the fighter jet deal. Lawmakers had said they were awaiting Turkey’s approval of Sweden’s NATO membership- including President Tayyip Erdogan’s signature – before deciding whether to approve the sale.
