Wells Fargo & Co Chief Executive Charles Scharf apologized on Wednesday for “making an insensitive comment reflecting my own unconscious bias.” His apology came after Reuters exclusively reported that he had told Black employees this summer that the bank had trouble reaching diversity goals because there was not enough qualified minority talent. Scharf’s comments drew criticism from senior Black executives as well as commentators on social media. U.S. Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted, “Perhaps it’s the CEO of Wells Fargo who lacks the talent to recruit Black workers.”
