Reuters marks its 170th anniversary this month, celebrating nearly two centuries of delivering factual, unbiased news coverage.

Founded in 1851, Reuters has remained committed to setting the standard for independent, trusted and global reporting, capturing some of the most historic moments of our time. From the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln to the rise and fall of the Berlin Wall to Facebook’s IPO, Reuters has been first and fast to bring the world history as it was made.

The past 170 years have been a unique and historic period filled with many innovations, from our founder Paul Julius Reuter using pigeon post in 1851 before advancing to telegraphy to the development of Reuters vast global network of 2500 journalists in 200 locations around the world.

“It takes dedication, resilience and innovation to adapt and thrive as the media landscape shifts and the needs of our clients evolve,” said Reuters President Michael Friedenberg and Editor-in-Chief Alessandra Galloni in a message to staff. “We have innovated and built on our success thanks to our world-class newsroom and commercial organization delivering unparalleled news coverage in 16 languages with impartiality, insight and speed.”

The past year has been hugely transformational for Reuters, including the launch of the new Reuters.com, the success of the agenda-setting Reuters Events business and a new brand campaign: The Source. This year also marks 80 years of the Trust Principles, a commitment Reuters has held since 1941, as well as the 50th anniversary of the German-language news service.
