As 2022 ends, we look back at significant Reuters initiatives and moments from the past year.
Investing in financial news coverage
Reuters more than doubled the number of reporters covering financial news in India. The move marked the expansion of Reuters coverage of local forex, fixed income and equity markets, government policy, the regulatory landscape and public companies, serving our partnership with Refinitiv.
Thomson Reuters also acquired PLX AI, a real-time financial news service powered by artificial intelligence. PLX AI delivers breaking financial news and insight that moves stock prices—including surprise earnings, outlook changes, mergers and acquisitions, important orders or management decisions—from 1,500 companies across the U.S. and Europe, using natural language processing engines.

Reuters Events hosted 69 events in 2022, with key events including Automotive USA, Total Health, Responsible Business, Global Energy Transition, Supply Chain Execution and Digital Health. In addition, Reuters global leadership forums, Reuters IMPACT, MOMENTUM and NEXT, returned in 2022 as hybrid events and attracted global leaders, including Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Diageo CEO Ivan Menezes, IKEA CEO Jesper Brodin, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, India Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Kotak Mahindra Bank Uday Kotak, Lithuania Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte, London Mayor Sadiq Khan, LSEG CEO David Schwimmer, Morgan Stanley Chairman & CEO James Gorman, Rolls Royce CEO Warren East and World Bank Group President David Malpass.
Following the relaunch of Reuters.com in 2021, Reuters delivered several enhancements to our mobile app and site in 2022. Key highlights include improving and integrating registration experience into our mobile app; providing sustainable business, energy and healthcare & pharmaceutical sections to showcase our editorial strengths in professional news as well as events coverage from Reuters Events; launching My View, a customization feature allowing users to follow topics, companies and authors of interest; and launching nine new newsletters this year.
Reuters also introduced Reuters Insight, its business intelligence platform. Reuters Insight offers propriety data sourced directly from leaders and powered by bespoke research to help users identify industry trends and enable smart decision-making. 2022 saw the launch of the insurance and sustainable business verticals.
Fact-checking and verification
Since 2020, Reuters has partnered with several major technology platforms on initiatives to combat misinformation. Reuters now fact-checks social media content in countries on four continents in five languages. Initiatives launched in 2022 include fact-checking content on Facebook and Instagram in Brazil, Spanish-language WhatsApp channels in the U.S. and Mexico and Portuguese-language WhatsApp channel in Brazil.
Reuters welcomed Stephanie Burnett as its digital verification editor this year. Burnett leads the Reuters Fact Check team in its efforts to tackle misinformation.
New content distribution
Reuters expanded access to its content through new channels, including a video streaming channel on LG smart TVs in the U.S., a channel on the Amazon News App on Fire TV and through Haystack News. A partnership with Amazon also saw Reuters provide U.S. midterm elections results on Amazon Alexa, one of the distribution channels of Reuters election results partnership with the U.S. National Election Pool.
Preparing the next generation of journalists
The Reuters Digital Journalism Course, produced in partnership with the Meta Journalism Project, was introduced in 2021 and provides free online training for journalists to improve their digital newsgathering, verification and publishing skills, as well as access to wellness and resilience resources. Reuters expanded the course’s reach this year with Brazilian Portuguese and 12 additional languages and added the fifth module, “Operating as Independent Media in a Turbulent World”. More than 90,000 people in over 40 countries have earned certificates by completing the course.
Reuters awarded scholarships for graduate journalism programs in the U.S. at NYU, CUNY, Northwestern University and Hampton University. In addition, Reuters and partners Durham University and Tina Brown named its first fellow in the Sir Harry Evans Global Fellowship in Investigative Journalism.
