Reuters has won five prestigious Society of Publishers in Asia awards, which celebrate editorial excellence in Asia while supporting and defending a free press.
Reuters coverage of the humanitarian crisis in Myanmar received the Global Award for Excellence in Human Rights Reporting, recognizing the work of Devjyot Ghoshal, Poppy McPherson, Ruma Paul, Shoon Naing, Wa Lone, Vijdan Mohammad Kawoosa and Steve Stecklow. The judges called the coverage ‘groundbreaking’ and praised the teams’ leveraging of cross-border sources, encrypted apps and satellite imagery to corroborate findings and provide deep investigative reporting.
The Global & Regional Award for Excellence in Reporting Breaking News was given to Reuters Seoul bureau and Asia graphics teams for their coverage of South Korea’s martial law crisis. The judges praised the coverage as ‘swift and comprehensive,’ highlighting Reuters rapid alerts, detailed analysis and interactive graphics in the face of tight deadlines and media control threats.
Reuters reporting on China’s macroeconomic policy received the coveted Scoop Award, recognizing the work of Reuters Greater China economy, finance and markets teams, with the judges calling the coverage ‘exceptional reporting on a particularly hard target’ and highlighting market-moving insights.
Adolfo Arranz, Han Huang, Sakura Murakami and Rebecca Pazos received an honorable mention in the category of Excellence in Infographics, for their work on an insightful graphic highlighting Japan’s bear problem. The judges called the work ‘infographic caviar’ and praised the team’s use of original illustrations and immersive storytelling.
Navesh Chitrakar received an honorable mention in the category of Excellence in Photography for ‘Mad Honey,’ a striking photo essay covering villagers in Nepal harvesting honey from precarious nests. The judges praised the essay’s ‘access, detail and sense of place’ and highlighted Navesh’s ‘care and curiosity’ with his subjects and their traditions.
