Reuters today announced a partnership with University of Missouri’s College Photographer of the Year contest, the most prestigious college photography competition in the world, to educate and inspire the next generation of photographers.
The student named Gold Winner in the Portfolio category of the 79th College Photographer of the Year (CPOY) will be awarded a 12-week paid internship at Reuters. The internship offers an opportunity to work alongside the award-winning Reuters Pictures team and provides the emerging photographer an immersive experience as a working photojournalist.
The program will focus on the development of technical skills for sending photos live from the field and editing skills to select the best frames, as well as feedback and coaching on the ethics of photojournalism and the art of photography from the Reuters Pictures team.
Rickey Rogers, Global Editor of Reuters Pictures, said: “Reuters recognizes the essential role that emerging photographers play in the future of photojournalism, and is proud to support them as they explore their new careers. Our partnership with the University of Missouri allows us to identify some of the top young talents and immerse them in the experience of working as part of a Reuters team.”
With the CPOY competition attracting entries from more than 600 students representing 160 educational institutions across 50 different countries, Reuters global footprint ensures the internship experience can be awarded to a photographer in almost any location around the world. This opportunity supports both organizations’ mutual ambition to increase diversity and inclusion in the newsroom.
Jackie Bell, Director of CPOY, said: “Our partnership with Reuters offers the 79th College Photographer of the Year a career-defining opportunity to further explore their passion for photography, develop new skills and learn from a team of award-winning photojournalists.”
This year’s Call for Entry opens on 17th August and will close on 16th September. More information on the College Photographer of the Year and how to apply can be found here.
