Reuters journalist Ivan Lyubysh-Kirdey has been named the recipient of the 2025 Gongadze Prize, one of Ukraine’s most prestigious journalism awards. He was recognized for his services to Ukraine and for his outstanding career in visual journalism.
The judges praised Lyubysh-Kirdey’s efforts to keep the people of Ukraine and the world informed with his coverage of the Ukraine-Russia war, as well as his bravery and strength following last year’s tragic attack on the Sapphire Hotel in Kramatorsk, in which he was seriously wounded.
The Gongadze Prize was founded in 2019 by PEN Ukraine in memory of Georgy Gongadze, who founded one of Ukraine’s leading news outlets, reported on corruption in the Ukrainian government, and was kidnapped and murdered in 2000. Lyubysh-Kirdey was previously recognized with an order of merit by President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in 2022 and the Deutscher Kamerapreis in 2015.
