Reuters has won the Royal Television Society's Breaking News award for Television Journalism for its coverage of the first 48 hours of the war between Israel and Hamas, a conflict that has claimed the lives of more than 30,000 people.

Reuters footage of the first two days of fighting was aired by more than 1,500 television stations worldwide and seen by hundreds of millions of people online. It included the first video of rockets streaming out from Gaza, the damage they caused in Israel, live coverage of the first Israeli strikes - and the first imagery of the human cost on both sides. This included some of the first video of the aftermath of the Hamas attack in southern Israel on October 7 and testimony of hostages' families.

Reuters video journalist Fadi Shana has also won the Royal Television Society's Camera Operator of the Year award for a body of work that documented life in Gaza well before the war between Israel and Hamas and the huge personal cost of the ensuing conflict, now in its 125th day.

Shana, 36, is a Gaza native who has worked for Reuters in the territory for 20 years. A media studies graduate, he has spent his entire career covering Gaza in peace and war.  His winning portfolio included live footage of rocket fire exchange, the searing human cost at ground level and the mass displacement of hundreds of thousands in southern Gaza. Prior to the war, Shana spent time documenting daily life in Gaza, including a boxing school for young girls.

Commenting on the awards, Reuters Editor-in-chief Alessandra Galloni said: "I am thrilled to see the brilliant work of my colleagues honored at this year's RTS awards. The work they do, day in and day out, is inspiring, and their success is well-deserved."
