Christian Hartmann, Reuters photographer: “This day, I decided to climb on the top of the empty tribune with my longest lens, a 600mm. My first target was to frame Rafael Nadal with the clay from the court on the back. Suddenly the sun appears through the clouds, and the mid-afternoon autumn light allowed me to set the perfect exposure on Nadal, which led to this fantastic black background. Nadal in action is impressive. Just before the light disappeared, he returned this shot, and I pressed the shutter. Within the next seconds, our sports picture desk moved this picture to the clients. It will remain one of my favorite pix of him.”
