From Creators to Newsrooms: How Young Audiences Are Engaging With News
Tuesday, May 12 2026, 8:00AM-9:00AM BST
Join us on 12 May at 8.00am BST for a live session presenting key findings from the Reuters Institute report Understanding Young News Audiences at a Time of Rapid Change.
The session will be introduced and moderated by Mitali Mukherjee, Director of the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford. Amy Ross Arguedas, Research Fellow at the Reuters Institute, will present the report findings.
Drawing on more than a decade of research, the presentation will explore how people aged 18-to-24 engage with news, how their habits and expectations are evolving, and what these shifts mean for journalism today.
The session will then move into a panel discussion featuring Tristan Werkmeister, Social Media Video Reporter at Reuters, alongside independent news creators and professionals working across the wider news creator ecosystem. Together, they will reflect on the report findings and discuss how young audiences are served in practice, bringing perspectives from both traditional newsrooms and creator led approaches.
What we will cover in this session:
Key findings from the Reuters Institute’s research into how young audiences access and engage with news
How changes in audience behavior are shaping storytelling, formats, and distribution strategies
How newsroom teams and independent creators are responding to these shifts in different ways
What these developments mean for traditional newsrooms, independent journalists, and creators looking to reach young audiences
