Digital News Report 2026: Launch Events in London and New York

The Digital News Report 2026, published by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, is based on a survey of over 90,000 people across 48 markets and provides one of the most comprehensive views of global news consumption.

To launch this year’s report, Reuters hosted events in London and New York, bringing together newsroom leaders and industry partners to explore what the findings mean for the future of news.

Attendees heard directly from lead author Jim Egan, with panel discussions moderated by Mitali Mukherjee, Director of the Reuters Institute. Recordings from both events are available on this page to watch-on-demand.

London panel included: Simon Robinson of Reuters, Emily Kent Smith of Goalhanger and Kamal Ahmed of Fortune UK and Europe.

New York panel included: Sally Buzbee of Reuters, Miki Toliver King of Google, Swati Sharma of Vox, Mukul Devichand of The New York Times and Ryan Merkley of NPR.

This year’s findings highlight a set of structural shifts shaping the industry:

  • Trust in news has fallen to 37 percent globally, its lowest level in a decade

  • Use of AI chatbots for news is rising, particularly among under 35s, though trust remains low

  • Platforms and video networks have overtaken news websites and television as the main way audiences access news

  • These shifts are happening across all age groups, not just younger audiences

  • Online video has become central to news consumption, with audiences increasingly watching on third party platforms
